Brendain's Story

必威 www.arurban.com Brendain loves the balance between social life and uni life that UC offers. From mentoring to internships, see his full story here

The Engineering school is one of the best in New Zealand. It has incredible facilities and is housed in brand new buildings. Together with high-class learning and great lecturers it's an opportunity not to be missed.

The trip was a six-week internship with 14 other UC students. We all worked in different places around Bangkok. I worked at a tech start-up called Hubba, writing software documentation for their website.

Tell us about going to Thailand!

It was unbelievable. The trip was a six-week internship with 14 other UC students. We all worked in different places around Bangkok. I worked at a tech start-up called Hubba, writing software documentation for their website.

Favourite thing about your Thai experience?

We got to visit so many places. We went to elephant sanctuaries and fishing villages. The people were so friendly. They took us on boat rides and we played soccer with the kids. It was an amazing sense of freedom. I made lifelong friends who continue to be an inspiration for me.

Is UC a good place for international opportunities?

It is. There are courses that take you overseas and the exchange programme is great. I'm off to China next to help with a research project. Ultimately my dream is to work on the power grid in Asia. Gaining international exposure has been a huge boost for my confidence in taking on a challenge like that.

Why did you choose UC?

When I came down to visit I just loved the campus. It's beautiful, self-contained, inclusive and there's something for everyone. There is no other campus like it in New Zealand. Plus Christchurch is the outdoor capital of New Zealand and it's all right on your doorstep! I'm a country boy so it's perfect for me.

How have you found the academics?

The Engineering school is one of the best in New Zealand. It has incredible facilities and is housed in brand new buildings. Together with high-class learning and great lecturers it's an opportunity not to be missed.

What else have you been up?

I've played ultimate frisbee and joined the Curry Soc exec. Recently I became a Go Canterbury student leader. That's a development programme that helps students from other cities integrate into Christchurch. We take them snowboarding and surfing, as well as offering support and mentorship.

It sounds like you've had a really well-rounded experience.

I love my experience here. UC offers a great balance between your social life and your uni life. I'm so glad I chose to come. It definitely feels like my home now.
